Your Purpose:
Your primary objective is to lead staff + cafe in line w/ Summit culture + values, creating an environment that sets your team up to deliver an awesome customer experience while providing employees with a great work environment and opportunities to learn and grow. With assistance from the ownership team and the Summit Coffee leadership team, you will aim to carry out a sustainable business model - focused on a positive environment for staff and customers, financial stability, and strategic community engagement. A key focus should also be quality + consistency of products, ensuring your team is prepared to deliver a remarkable experience with each order. As a manager, you are the team captain. You’ll play on the field alongside your team and lead from there - by example. You set the tone for your team on all sides of the bar. Your job is to empower your team to be great baristas, and great champions of Summit. Make sure they know what the goal is and let them play.
Core Expectations:
Lead baristas in:
Creating a hospitable environment - between and among teammates, for customers, and for our community.
Day-to-day support - ensuring the cafe is operating smoothly. Help baristas find answers to questions, get to know customers, keep an eye on operations and look for areas where you can make the cafe run smoother!
Understanding the “why” of Summit + your role in the big picture - be a champion of Summit for your team, including what is happening at your cafe but also as a whole. Summit is a quickly growing national coffee and lifestyle brand, and it’s important that everyone in the company understands the big picture!
Upholding quality standards - this includes product quality (starting with initial training → ongoing coffee QC) but also general job requirements such as timeliness, hospitality, cleanliness, etc. An important part of your role is training baristas from orientation to espresso, coaching them through passing the BL1, and continuing to push quality forward in your cafe ́ day to day after they have passed the test.
Celebrating a job well done, but also holding baristas to the expectations we have for them. You will host check-ins throughout the year to have a more formal space for this, but you should be aware of this at all times for your staff!
Creating an environment where curiosity and growth is cultivated. Engage our staff with new coffees, read Summit journals, take continuing edu classes etc.
Lead your cafe by:
Ensuring a hospitable and inclusive environment - including cleanliness, warmth, energy, music, etc. Make sure staff understands expectations here, and that there are good systems in place to maintain this each day.
Communicating regularly with staff. Make sure staff is aware of goings-on in the cafe + company, and informally check in with them regularly. Create an environment where they are motivated to create remarkable experiences each day.
Maintaining inventory of items - part of excellence in a cafe is being able to serve each item and serve it well. This includes ordering items for use, but also completing a weekly stock count for both accounting purposes + awareness of cafe needs.
Managing + scheduling your staff to optimize the experience for staff and customers. You should set the schedule 2 weeks in advance so your staff is fully aware of the expectations around shifts! And you should maintain steady communication with your employees to support their growth and performance.
Ensuring financial health of your cafe - In partnership with your owner, part of your role is to drive revenue and manage expenses. This includes awareness of and responsibility for the P&L statement, keeping up with monthly reports, and making operational decisions driven by this information.
Marketing digitally - You oversee the digital storytelling and marketing in alignment with our brand and marketing playbook and with support from Summit’s marketing department. You should have an active presence on social media and through email with a tone in alignment with Summit as a whole, but that also has individual personality. Use this platform to engage with customers, make sure they know what’s going on!
Facilitating community engagement and local partnerships in alignment with company strategy. Grow your community presence + revenue in tandem. For example, host + market Give Back Fridays, find ways to collaborate with people we admire in your market, find creative ways to engage with local vendors, etc. Use this as an opportunity to be a good neighbor, but drive business at the same time.
Structure:
This is a full time salaried position of 40 hours/week. You will work approx. 30 hours behind the bar each week, but this number can be fluid and informed by your own discretion and in partnership with your owner.
At least 50% of non-bar hours should be spent in your cafe - working in that space as your office. It’s important for you to be around the cafe to provide support, spend time with baristas + customers not during a shift, and ensure that the cafe is running smoothly at all times.
