This Certified Organic Benchmark Series comes to Summit from Tolima, Colombia, where we sourced it from family owned farms organized around the Asociacion de Agricultores y Productores de Café Especial de Montalvo. AGPROCEM has 35 members who live in Montalvo which is located within the municipality of Planadas in the department of Tolima. AGPROCEM was founded in 2013 by Edinson Vaquiro and Israel Montes, who are coffee producers from Tolima. The association’s goal is to assist its members to improve quality while obtaining better prices for their specialty coffee.
The Coffee | Harvested in the summer of 2017, this fresh crop of coffee is grown between 1,650-2,100 masl in the mountainous terrain of Tolima. This coffee landed in the U.S. this spring, and is a terrific example of the dynamic products coming out of the specialty coffee industry in Colombia. After picking the coffee, the producers depulped the cherries and fully washed the seeds, or coffee beans. It then was dried in the sun.
The Story | From Brian Helfrich, Summit CEO and Green Buyer: “We’ve been talking around the roastery a lot lately how dynamic Colombian coffee is. There are crops with stunning tropical acidity, and others with a deep chocolate body. This coffee from Tolima shocked us on the table for its drinkability — fruit-forward and sweet, and both approachable for less-adventurous coffee drinkers and dynamic for far-out consumers. It’s a perfect offering in our catalog, and works great both as a hot drip and as espresso.”
